Takata airbags have been one of the most widely used brands of airbags in automobiles. These airbags have also been subject to one of the largest auto safety recall in the nation’s history with over 125 million vehicles included. This large recall due to dangerous effects of these airbags had been cause to at least 20 fatalities and more than 180 injuries throughout the nation. This led to a very large lawsuit against the manufacturers and companies that use these airbags.
Separate from Takata’s major exploding airbag recall and lawsuit, there is a new defect that is being recalled. This recall is lesser known, but is now becoming the subject of a new Takata airbag lawsuit.
Takata Airbag Lawsuit
A new defect was recently revealed that has led to additional recalls of around 3 million vehicles due to potentially defective Takata airbag inflators. These include older models of vehicles from brands such as BMW, Audi, Honda, Ford, Toyota, and Subaru. This new recall covers different airbags than Takata’s initial exploding airbags that were recalled.
This airbags defects are related to the Non-Azide Driver Inflators (NADI). These inflators are not being made with sufficient seals and these seals can deteriorate over time if exposed to humidity and moisture. This is causing the inflators to possibly explode too quickly leading the airbags to rupture. When they rupture, these airbags can blast metal fragments at the car’s passengers, causing serious injury. They could also fail to deploy properly which can be dangerous to the car’s passengers during a car accident.
According to ABC News reports, Takata is recalling an additional 10 million airbags due to this defect. They claim to have produced millions of the inflators that are causing disfunction, but they believe the majority of the airbags were installed in older vehicles that are not used as often anymore.
The NHTSA gives warning about this new 2019 Takata recall and is urging people to check if their vehicle is included by typing in your vehicle identification number (VIN) on their website.
