Elmiron Eye Disease Lawsuit
McEwen Law Firm is reviewing claims on behalf of Interstitial Cystitis (IC) patients who took the prescription drug Elmiron and are now suffering from pigmentary maculopathy, a severe eye disease that could lead to vision loss and blindness.
Lawsuits are already being filed against the manufacturer of Elmiron, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, for their alleged failed to warn the public about the risks associated with taking Elmiron. Because of Janssen’s failure to warn and failure to issue a recall or update its safety warnings despite, thousands of patients taking Elmiron may one day lose their vision.
New Elmiron Dangers Revealed
Hundreds of thousands of patients (mostly women) have been prescribed Elmiron to treat their interstitial cystitis (IC) – or more commonly known as painful bladder syndrome. Elmiron is the only FDA approved pill to treat IC and has been the cornerstone treatment option available for decades. That was until 2015 when an ophthalmologist in Georgia noticed a number of patients, who had been taking Elmiron for over a decade, developed unusual changes in their macula. There was nothing in the patients’ histories that explained the abnormalities.
Further studies were conducted and in October 2019, the American Academy of Ophthalmology published an article regarding a new study that revealed approximately one quarter of all patients with significant exposure to the drug “show signs of retinal damage.” The study also revealed that the medication toxicity could masquerade other retinal conditions. It remains unknown how Elmiron causes these abnormalities but doctors are urging their patients to be screened yearly for retinal damage.
Common symptoms of the specific form of maculopathy linked to Elmiron include:
- A change in the color of the retina
- Trouble reading
- Less vivid colors
- Blurred vision
- Difficulty adjusting to dimmer lighting
- Dark spots in field of vision
Patients with Elmiron induced maculopathy have also been misdiagnosed with other eye conditions including:
- Pattern Dystrophy
- Stargardt Disease
- Age-related macular degeneration
