Vaginal mesh implants are designed to help women with pelvic organ prolapse which can occur after childbirth, menopause or a hysterectomy. Essentially this occurs when the pelvic floor collapses and the pelvic organs start to slip out of place or protrude from the body. Vaginal mesh implants are also designed to help those that suffer from stress urinary incontinence which occurs when the pelvic floor muscles are not able to support the bladder. Again, this often occurs after childbirth.
Vaginal Mesh Implant Health Risks Confirmed
While vaginal mesh products were advertised as being safe and effective with minimal complications this is actually not the case. Recent FDA reports have indicated that the complications with vaginal mesh products can be life altering. Side effects of vaginal mesh implants can include:
- Erosion – the mesh can erode into the vaginal walls and into other organs
- Perforation of pelvic organs, blood vessels and bowels
- The need for repeat surgery
- Pain and pressure in the abdomen
- Vaginal discharge and infection
- Vaginal scarring and bleeding
- Continued pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence
In some instances a repeat surgery may be needed to correct the damage; in other instances, however, the damage is too great and there is nothing that can be done. Even with multiple repeat surgeries you may still experience the devastating and life changing complications of a virginal mesh implant.
Filing a Vaginal Mesh Lawsuits
There are currently both class action vaginal mesh lawsuits as well as individual vaginal mesh lawsuits going forth across the country. Both lawsuits are based on the fact that the manufacturers failed to warn patients of the complications of the products. Studies have found that around 10 percent of women will experience complications from the vaginal mesh implant which equates to thousands of women.
The main lawsuits across the country are related to the following five manufacturers of vaginal mesh products:
- CR Bard Inc.
- American Medical Systems
- Boston Scientific Corp
- Ethicon Inc.
